FROM MY REVIEWS IN THE 356 REGISTRY:

PORSCHE 356 XVIIIeme MEETING INTERNATIONAL FRANCE - 1993

Pierre Gosselin and Philippe Colleu / 356 Club of France

144 pages, almost entirely composed of color photographs

You may remember a nice 356 book published commemorating the tenth and last meeting of the 356 EUROCLUB.  As near as I can understand, 356 EUROCLUB no longer exists, having been replaced by multiple national registries; however, the annual meetings still continue under a slightly different name.  Hence we now have the 18th international meeting (or XVIII MEETING INTERNATIONAL FRANCE for those of you more comfortable in early metric units).  The new book tries a new approach. Porsche 356 history is illustrated by superb color photographs of the cars attending the meet. There is even a list in the back of who attended, arranged by country.  Of universal interest is the placing of first in open class by Anspach and Frick with a 1957 black convertible D.  Almost as interesting is the entry by Marie-Claire van Bruystegem and her ex-Peter Geiger red 356A coupe.  This car was a well known concours car in the Michigan area and was invited to the Meadowbrook concours several years ago. I had met Marie-Claire at the Gmünd meet in 1991 and my wife Patty told her we could find her a great car - and Bill Rohrer and I did!  I am delighted to see she is having fun with it. Of almost no interest is a  Don Fowler look-a-like in what looks like Dennis Frick's SC cab. Warren Eads and his 550 Spyder, the Gummows, but managed to avoid being photographed.  Since no Gmünd cars made the event, the history starts with an Belgium entered '51 pre-A coupe, which won best of show.  Incidentally, the editors did an excellent job with the captions and note when a part is not correct, such as the pre-A's carburetor air filters.  There really must be something about the quality of the light in Belgium and France; the photographs are sharp and in focus but give that dreamy feeling that came with the first Impressionists.  By the way the text is in both French and English.
